Puce Presentation

We explore the quantum phenomena in nano-scale electronic circuits.

For this purpose, the devices fabricated in the lab's outstanding nanofabrication facilities are measured at extremely low temperatures, a few thousandths of Kelvin above absolute zero, with ultra-sensitive measurement setups.

The research projects within the field of quantum transport are organized in three ensembles/teams.

The team Quantum Physics and Transport investigates experimentally a broad spectrum of fundamental physics in electrical quantum circuits, from correlated electronic matter to quantum transport down to the most elementary level of the single conduction channel.

Main on-going research lines:

Quantum transport of heat and energy transfers

Many-body physics in few-channel quantum circuits

Selection of international firsts:

  • - 6 mK temperature for the electrons in small quantum circuits, a world record for micrometer and nanometer-scale devices (Nature Communications, 2016)
  • - Controlling charge quantization by quantum fluctuations, in a metallic circuit node (Nature, 2016).
  • - Observation of the 'charge' Kondo effect. The Kondo effect, a test-bed for the strongly-correlated electron physics, also applies to the macroscopic quantum degrees of freedom of electrical circuits (Nature, 2015).
  • - Measurement of the quantum limit of heat flow across a single electronic channel. Heating drives the transition toward a classical description, but heat transport itself is ruled by quantum mechanics (Science, 2013).
  • - Out-of-equilibrium spectroscopy of the electronic distribution function in a 1D conductor, the quantum Hall channel (Nature Physics, 2010).

      DOC-FLUC : Détection « on-chip » des fluctuations quantiques de courant de nano-systèmes

      Main goals : The project is to develop and exploit the capabilities of on-chip noise detectors to investigate electronic transport in mesoscopic conductors. On-chip detectors allow a well-controlled and optimal coupling to noise sources, giving access to high-frequency noise and to high moments of noise (at least the third one). Conversely, the intimate coupling between detector and source gives rise to back-action, which needs to be modelled and accounted for. (2009-2013)

      CHENANOM : Characterization of electronic nanodevices by noise measurements

      Main goals : Recently, it has been discovered that noise generated by electronic devices contains valuable information on microscopic transport processes not available from measurements of the current-voltage characteristics. While measurements of the noise spectrum are standard now at several laboratories, the determination of higher order noise cumulants is currently still an experimental challenge. From theoretical considerations there is considerable interest in getting access to these quantities. The proposal will focus and novel strategies to measure higher order noise cumulants by means of on-chip noise detectors. Theoretical work will analyse possible complications of the data analysis due to, e.g., detector feedback, environmental effects and spurious external noise, while experimental work will fabricate and employ onchip noise detectors for the characterization of electronic nanostructures. (2007-2010)
